In 1781 the parish priest Monzó, the apothecary Bodí and the scribe Meseres planted the first orange field in Carcaixent, a village located 40 km south of Valencia on the banks of the Júcar River, which was a great success.
Because the climatic and environmental conditions of the area were excellent, the oranges that were obtained were of great quality, size and taste. And they soon began to be commercialized both domestically and internationally, causing great economic growth in the Ribera area.
At the beginning of the 19th century Vicente Ribera Tarragó planted our current field and in 1870 his brother José Ribera Tarragó had the current house built, the Ribera Garden.
José Ribera García inherited the orchard and continued with the business that was flourishing at the time.
Given the need for manipulation for the embedding of the orange and its export, he decided to build the beautiful modernist-style warehouse known as the “Cathedral of the Orange”.
The Cathedral of the Orange was built by José Ríos Chinesta between 1903 and 1910 and is located next to the train station.
In 1968 the Naranjas Ribera brand was transferred to Rafael Vila Sellens who continued the business specializing in Christmas gifts and always offering the highest quality to customers.
All this and much more on our journey through time to learn about the evolution of orange cultivation in Carcaixent.
